Honestly, I’m one for the nice perks in Key Club, but at the same time, it just bothers me to the bone. By now, lots of us are aware of what Key Club is, non-profit organization, community service, yadda yadda yadda. Branching off that. Community Service. Major emphasis on Community Service. Wait, let me bold that for you. Community Service. I know this may not be a problem in other districts or schools, but it sure is where I’m from. Key Club is too based around the idea of swag nowadays. I remember that Key Club was always based around that, but I feel that it’s getting to the point where people are starting to forget what Key Club was actually started for. Everybody is too trapped around the ideas of for example, being better than the other clubs in the school, or winning a spirit rally at RTC or something. I know that some of those events are made specifically to showcase spirit or club pride, but not everything is really about that. Key Club is not swag. And I feel that we emphasize too much swag in this club. Bringing the biggest club to RTC means nothing in Key Club. The spirit rally is not the reason why we have an RTC in the first place, nor is having a fall rally prep. The more you advertise to the membership (especially the new members) of being better than this club or that club, then their mindsets will solely revolve around just that. It just all defies the reasons of having a Key Club. I mean, the Key Club pledge doesn’t read:

“I pledge on my honor, to uphold the swagness of Key Club International. To build my swag, school, and spirit. To cheer for my club and God. And to combat all forces which tend to undermind my homeclub’s spirit.”

NO! It’s all so wrong! We’re a community service organization for a reason! To serve our home, school, and communities! The pride and spirit should be the second thing you think of when you think of this club. When someone asks you, What is Key Club? I am willing to bet you your first response is “Key Club is the largest international student led organization based on bettering our home, school, and communities” (or something along those lines). But if you ask me, based on what Key Club relatively revolves around now, responses should be (or at least I’m willing to bet the freshmen who still don’t know what Key Club truly is would say) “Key Club is a club where we do community service and try to have fun with it by showing our spirit and cheering a lot!” (again, I’m not saying this is true for everywhere there is Key Club, but that’s how it is in the vast majority of where I’m from).

But I don’t know anymore really.  I guess that’s just my slice of pie I wanted to share with you guys. I like pie. Don’t hate me for having opinions also. But yeah.. sigh…
